Mr. Kiffin would be extremely interesting hire for Tennessee. I am torn on this one. First, we’ll see the exact same west coast slanted pro-style offense as we have seen for the last 15 years in Tennessee football. I am ok with that, if he can bring in the 4 and 5 star players that allowed him to excel at USC. Now, does he have what it takes to be a nation wide recruiter, which is absolutely necessary at Tennessee. He would need to bring in a staff that has ties to the South, and its recruiting scenarios.
One thing I do think is impressive is that as a position coach he was completely involved in the resurgance of the Southern Cal program that seem to happen over night. 2001 they were losing to Arkansas in the Las Vegas Bowl, and one year later they spanked Iowa in the Rose Bowl. They went on to dominate college football from 2003-2005, including a shared National Championship, and a BCS title. However, how much of this was Kiffin’s doing? I believe he was instrumental in this. One area Tennessee has lacked is player development. Our players over the last few years have not seemed to improve through the year, especially at the skill position. Our WRs get dominated at the line of scrimmage which is detrimental to our inexperienced QBs. Hopefully he could work on this immediately. This is his specialty, WRs, and hopefully he would bring in an experienced QB and RB coach. Not to mention he’ll probably need to recruit a brand new offensive line, since we just have a bunch of slobs right now. Or whip them into shape.
Please for the love of every thing good, bring in a new Strength and Conditioning Coach, steal someone from USC. We are weak and slow…
On the defensive side of the ball, Kiffin has a lot of coaching connections. He is dear friends with former USC D-line coach and Ole Miss head coach, Ed Orgeron. Would he come with Kiffin, or would he pull his dad out of the NFL? Monte Kiffin makes a cool $1M + a year, so that would be a tough one…
